Togoshun, Zhuge
085-221
In the morning, Lady Iskendu explained that preparations for the expedition would take up the entire day, but that they would fly up to the family hunting lodge - Marugaya - first thing the following morning. The Baron and most of the family would be extremely busy during this time, and the visitors were welcome to relax in the manor or spend some more time exploring the city. She also explained that they were welcome to go with her to see one of the family's local ranches where she had some business matters to discuss with the manager. Henri and Harim were both interested in learning more about the family businesses and volunteered to join her. Thiel and Jordan tagged along more for lack of anything better to do than any interest in seeing a farm.
Seeing the ranch's massive cattle first hand was intimidating for Thiel, even more so when he learned that the domestic cattle - well over 2 meters at the shoulder - were small and gentle compared to their wild cousins. Lady Naoko explained that the inferior beef typically sold to offworlders came from "lazy and flabby" herds such as the ones found here, while the meat from the wild cattle is superior in every way. She and the ranch manager also discussed their plans for improving the herd, by bringing in wild breeding stock and changing feeding and exercise programs. Harim and Thiel spent some time talking with the ranch hands, discovering with some surprise that they enjoyed their work and respected their employers.
Following the tour of the ranch, Lady Naoko returned to the castle for some important meetings. She left her guests in the care of an employee named Mahajon Jongoro - or "Jon-Jon" as he preferred to be called. Jon-Jon was to act as a guide for the visitors as they spent the afternoon in the city. He informed the group that he had a quick errand to run in the city before showing them around. His errand turned out to be paying off a gambling debt at a local dojo. The fighters at the dojo were practicing the local martial art - Samuskido - which seemed to be an acrobatic sword fighting technique fought with wooden "blades" and padded armor. Harim was fascinated and asked for a quick lesson and a chance to spar. He fought fairly well against the instructor, Goro Kamatan. Jordan also volunteered, although he didn't fare nearly as well. Finally, Thiel stepped into the ring and - through some trickery - managed to beat Goro. Luckily, Harim was able to use his exceptional charm to mollify the offended fighter. In the end, both JonJon and Goro were impressed with both the curiosity and courage of the offworlders.
The group had dinner at a restaurant featuring an ongoing variety show to entertain the diners - primarily wealth businessmen. After eating and enjoying the show JonJon, led them to the arena where Goro Kamatan was fighting a match. This professional match involved high tech electronic blades that registered the location and power of each contact, but also had a set of judges scoring the combatants' grace and style during the fight. Goro barely won the close fought match, his power and technique offset by his opponent's impressive acrobatics. Afterwards, JonJon led them to what he called a "real fight" - an illegal, underground samuskido tournament. Unlike the earlier professional match, there were no scoreboards or style judges, just two men with wooden swords in a brutal fight until one was knocked out or yielded.
Marugaya, Zhuge086-221 and 087-221
Late the next morning, the group boarded a transport for the 3 hour flight to the family hunting lodge at Marugaya. They travelled with the Lady Naoko, he father, and both of her brothers, as well as a small group of bodyguards and scouts. After landing and getting settled in their rooms, they were given a brief tour of the lodge and grounds followed by an informal, rustic dinner with their hosts. Since the next day was going to start at dawn, every one retired to their rooms for an early night.
The next day, Lady Naoko introduced the group to the family's head guide Tomonaga Masuogon.
Tommy taught the men how to drive the ATVs used by the hunters, and had them drive around the grounds. He also showed them the 20mm MagRifles they would be armed with for the the hunt. After this brief training session, Tommy took the group on on extended trail ride to familiarize them with the vehicles, with occasional stops for target practice with the MagRifles. During one of these stops, a low flying grav transport raced overhead off in the direction of the lodge. Lady Naoko explained that there was no legitimate reason for the flyer to be there and headed in that direction could only mean trouble. When they attempted to call a warning into the lodge they discovered their signals were being jammed, which only confirmed Lady Naoko's suspicions.
The party hopped back on their ATVs and headed back to the lodge. Tommy raced ahead at a dangerous speed, but Lady Naoko stayed back with the offworlders who were not skilled enough drivers to keep up. About half an hour later, the stragglers found where Tommy had abandoned his ATV out of sight of the lodge. They followed him up a rough trail to where he was observing the lodge from behind a low wall.
The flyer had landed in a large courtyard between the lodge and two armed men were guarding the area. Their uniforms and the markings on the flyer were from a neighboring - supposedly allied - nation. After some discussion, Thiel and Harim began to sneak off along the wall trying to flank the guards. Before they had gone more than a few steps, gunfire erupted from within the lodge and a number of windows on the upper floor shattered. The startled guards in the courtyard turned to face the building and Tommy and Lady Naoko took the opportunity to fire. The 20mm explosive slugs designed to kill 6-ton Zhugean bulls did horrific damage to the bodies of the two men, but there was no return fire from within the building - probably due to the confusion following whatever firefight had occurred within. Thiel headed for the entrance to the servant's wing. Harim, not being prepared for a firefight boarded the flyer, both to secure it and to see if he could disable the communication jammer. The rest of the party, went into the guest wing of the lodge.
Shortly after entering the building, Thiel discovered that the staff had been executed. Meanwhile, the main party ran into a gunman. They took him out quickly, but not before Tommy was wounded. While they were pinned down in another firefight, Thiel took out another invader with one quiet shot from his laser pistol. Jordan and Naoko killed their combatant and made their way up the stairs, while Thiel sneaked up to the door of the Baron's office.
Peeking around the door frame, Thiel saw the Baron - looking badly wounded - sitting at his desk. A man was holding a pistol to the Baron's head and using him as a shield. He told Thiel to drop his weapon and kneel in the corner; worried about the Baron's safety, he complied. Jordan came to the doorway next laser pistol levelled at the hostage-taker. While they bantered and threatened each other, Jordan was carefully lining up a shot. It was a risky move, but Jordan's aim was true. The man's armor saved his life though, and his return fire left Jordan bleeding on the floor. Thiel took the opportunity to charge, while Henri and Naoko burst into the room. The man dove away from the desk firing wildy in the direction of the Baron and Thiel. Thinking quickly, Thiel shoved the Baron out of the line of fire, but took a gauss needle in his own shoulder. Henri fired his pistol and hit the man, but wasn't able to penetrate the his body armor. Finally, Naoko closed the gap and took him down with her power sword.
Naoko began patching up the wounded, while Henri investigated the scene. He found that the final enemy's harness looked to be missing some sort of equipment, but didn't have time to determine what it was or where it might be. Worried that more invader's might be on the way - they hurriedly loaded their wounded and the unconscious prisoners onto the flyer. Shortly after they took off, an explosion rocked the lodge and half the building collapsed into a flaming pile of debris.

Episode 4 - Travelling
Howotro High Port
073-221 through 076-221
Returning to the High Port, the four friends decided they needed to be better prepared in case of future trouble and began shopping for better weapons and armor. They also decided, since Mr. Smith would be unavailable for a few weeks, that they would accept the invitation from Lady Iskendu to join her for a hunt on Zhuge.
Harim arranged the use of a Yacht from Imperial Elite Charters for a one week trip from Howotro to Zhuge. The ship Cassandra's Victory is a 200 ton Frontier Yacht with improved drives, but less cargo space than traditional yachts. The ship includes a well appointed lounge, and a small exercise room that includes 2 equestrian simulators for those passengers that wish to practice (or learn) horseback riding.
Harim and Thiel spent the next few days finding passengers to fill the spare staterooms, while Marquis de Lyons was able to use his connections to arrange for a lucrative mail delivery contract. This little jaunt was going to be quite a profitable endeavor. Jordan spent a few days shopping for robotics kits and parts for a little side project he had in mind, and then spent the last day going through the ship making sure everything was in good condition.
Disembarking from the High Port, travelling to the jump point, and entering jump space went smoothly except a very minor power flicker during the jump transition.
Once the ship entered jump space, there was little for the crew to do for the next week. Jordan immediately began to track down the cause of the power flicker, and spent his spare time working on his drone construction project. Thing went fairly well, buy he eventually discovered that he was missing one key component.
Thiel's responsibilities included managing routine ship operations and maintenance, and in his spare time made good use of the ship's gym to pursue a fitness program.
Henri and Harim spent their time entertaining and being entertained by the passengers. A business executive named Tamati Gage had paid extra for the master suite, and spent most of his time within it. Another passenger, Nuria Estera, was an opera singer traveling with her fiance and another musician. The Marquis convinced her to put on an impromptu performance for the other passengers.
Felicia Brown was a business woman who nearly bored Harim to sleep with talk of mergers, acquisitions, and contract negotiations when he asked her why she was travelling to Zhuge. She did seem inordinately interested in the workings of the ship, but despite the crew's suspicions, nothing seemed to come of it.
Jia Wubai was moving to Zhuge with his wife Tu pursuing a career and a fusion engineer. He was quite happy to have a guided tour of the engineering section and talk about about the minutiae of power plant design and maintenance.
Three of the passengers - Augustina Konani, Emma Manuelita, and Aurora Natsumi - were interested in discussing the upcoming hunt. Augustina was a travel correspondent, writing a story about hunting expeditions, while Emma was a researcher studying the biology of wild Zhugean cattle, and Aurora was Emma's Zhugean guide.
Harim was quite intrigued by Lady Kandajha Geruga, who spent much of her time and her family's wealth on travelling throughout the sector.
The remaining passengers has only paid for middle passages, and spent little time in the lounge interacting with the others. Adeline Tuuliki looked like a hard case and potential trouble, but warmed up a bit after Harim turned on the charm. He suspected that she was a bounty hunter who had tracked a target to Zhuge. Fred Pangko was a farmer who had won a lottery of some kind and wanted to "see the universe", he seemed to be awestruck just by being onboard such a luxurious ship.
Zhuge, High Port and Togoshun
084-221
Jordan's astrogation was flawless and Cassandra's Victory arrived at the Zhuge High Port without incident. While the passenger's went their separate ways, Jordan discussed the power flicker issues he had found and fixed with the leasing company.
Henri sent a message to Lady Iskendu, and then spent some time looking up some information about her and Zhuge in general. (Library data) As it turns out, Lady Naoko Iskendu is the daughter of Baron Marumo Iskendu who is the Imperial representitive for Zhuge and one of the most powerful men on the planet.
A short time later, a shuttle arrived at the High Port to take Henri and his friends down to the city of Togoshun, the home of the Iskendu family. Togoshun was a small city in the temparate equatorial region of Zhuge, and the group found the city remarkably charming and it's population very polite. To his surprise, Harim tried and failed to find a seedy underside to the city. Eventually, they made their way to the Iskendu manor, which was an impressive half-fortress, half-palace perched on the cliffs overlooking the city. Lady Naoko greeted the men politely and offered to introduce them to her father. As they approached the Baron's office, they passed a group of very angry looking men in business suits storming out.
Baron Marumo Iskendu was a dynamic man of middling height in his early 60's. Despite Thiel's misgivings, he greeted his non-Noble guests as graciously as the two Marquis. The Baron explained that the angry businessmen had "tried to sell me something, I had no interest in buying" He seemed like a man that would be difficult to manipulate or bully.
Originally the family hunt was planned for a few weeks later, but since they had guests now, the Baron decided to move up the date of the hunt so that they would leave in the next day or two. He then had some servants show the visitors to rooms that had been set aside for them and explained that a formal dinner was being arranged for the evening.
The four men were given the black silk robes that were traditionally worn for these formal meals, but Henri could not resist adding a little flair to the extremely plain costume. The ceremonial dagger he tucked into his sash raised a few eyebrows at the table, but no serious complaints were raised. The meal was served at a small table for the Baron, his two sons and daughter as well as the four guests. Each of the seventeen courses was a single small, exquisitely prepared dish. The first course was a glass of extraordnarily strong liquor, after which the Baron seemed much more relaxed and talkative. He spoke of his strong support for Duke Aremani and his disdain for those of his peers who were not as supportive. He also talked about the recent increase in piracy and his theory that the "pirates" were actually being supported by some faction within the Imperium. The meal ended with another glass of the same liquor, and the friends made their ways to their rooms. Preparations for the hunt would begin early the next day.

Zhuge
Zhuge 2413 B685574-C Ag Ga Ht Ni 513
Trade Codes: Agricultural, Garden, High Tech, Non-Industrial
Summary:
While technically Zhuge is considered a “garden” planet, its long cold winters are far from pleasant. The inhabitants of this world are known to be cold, stoic, and stubborn, but on the other hand their traditions of loyalty and honor are well respected. The world is divided into roughly a dozen nations, each of which is little more than a loose confederation of independent provinces. Shifting alliances, changing borders, and centuries-old feuds make Zhugean politics difficult for outsiders to follow, but their frequent wars are fought under strict codes of conduct that make civilian casualties and collateral damage virtually non-existent.
Zhuge is home to a unique breed of cattle - bos zhugensis - which is related to terrestrial livestock, but grows to tremendous sizes. An adult bull typically reaches almost 3 meters at the shoulder and masses around 6000 kilograms. Vast quantities of Zhugean beef are sold to the Navy at discount prices where it is reviled as tough, greasy, and nearly flavorless.

Episode 3 - The Getaway
Densun, Howotro
065-221 through 072-221
Captain Ross handed Henri his laser pistol and then proceded to drag a struggling Mr. Chen across the rooftop toward the garage, while Harim and Thiel took up positions covering the rear. Moments later two thugs in dark suits came through the door and fired wildly at the fleeing men. Marquis de Lyon ducked behind some cover while Jordan continued hustiling their erstwhile business partner toward the building. Thiel knocked out one of the attackers with a stunner and the other fell to Henri's laser.
Reaching the garage, Jordan began assessing the state of the grav cars... which was not terribly good. One of the two cars had been partially cannibalized to repair the other, but neither was immediately ready to fly. Meanwhile, Harim had taken the pistols from the fallen men and moved to a point where he could cover the door, and Henri made his way to the garage.
Another pair of thugs stormed out onto the roof firing enthusiastically if not accurately. Despite Harim's stolen pistol jamming, these men were quickly gunned down as well. Captain Ross determined that he could get one of the cars operational with just a couple parts taken from the other car and began doing just that.
During a brief respite, Harim and Thiel made their way to the garage. Thiel borrowed a pistol and found a concealed spot from which he could cover the rooftop. While Ross worked on the cars, the two Marquis realized that there was another door in the garage that lead to a stairwell into the building. Seeing the massive powerplant for the cannibalized car was on a wheeled hoist, they maneuvered it to the door and dropped it, effectivly jamming the door shut. Moments later there was a determined banging on the door. Harim fired through the door and from the cry of pain on the other side, apparently wounded someone. The thugs returned fire through the door, but didn't manage to injure anyone.
As soon as the car was operational, Harim jumped into the driver's seat and Henri climbed into the front passenger seat. Jordan opened the garage door and hustled Mr. Chen into the back of the car. Thiel hopped in and Harim flew off just as more thugs charged onto the rooftop.
The first few seconds of flight were a bit shaky as Marquis Samadr familiarized himself with the controls, but he soon had the car under control. Unfortunately, a few moments later the car's electrical systems started shorting out and the car lost altitude quickly. Harim didn't quite land softly, but he did manage to put the car down without a major crash. The car would never fly again, but the passengers were able to walk away only slightly shaken.
Luckily, between the spore-laden air and the rundown nature of the neighborhood, there were no witnesses to see them exit the vehicle and hustle down the street. Soon they heard a police siren approaching, and they ducked unseen into a coffee shop.
Mr. Chen explained that in addition to being a gangster, Thomas Sun was also a police detective, so that they could expect more trouble than help from the authorities. When asked if their deal was still on, he apologized and explained that he was going to have to flee the planet and would no longer have the money to invest in a starship.
While they were pondering their next move, Jordan realized that he had received a message sometime during the excitement. It turned out to be from a Baroness Keshiigma who had attended his reception but didn't get a chance to meet him. She was preparing for short cruise on her yacht and invited Captain Ross to join her. Marquis de Lyon remebered her as a remarkably unpleasant dinner companion, but eventually agreed that she could be useful given their current circumstances.
After a brief call to the Baroness' secretary, a car was sent to pick them up at the coffee shop. With a little persuasion and a twenty credit bill, the driver agreed to drop Mr. Chen at the starport before taking everyone else to the harbor. The entrance to the starport was blocked by a police cordon, but the Baroness' driver was waved through without incident. Thiel escorted Mr. Chen to a bank inside of the starport and received the promised Cr.10000 as well as another apology.
Once on the yacht, the four men dined with the Baroness and her consort. She turned out to be as unpleasant as Henri had described her, fawning over the Marquis' and the Navy Captain, but rude and dismissive to Thiel. With some carefully applied charm, Harim convinced the Baroness to talk about her various businesses. He learned that she was an investor in several starhip companies, including the very same Sentinel Express Lines that they had been investigating. She also revealed that she was a friend and business partner of the mysterious Mr. Smith. The Baroness offered to provide a personal introduction to Mr. Smith but explained that he was going to be out of the system for a number of weeks. The four friends spent the rest of the week relaxing on the luxurious - if somewhat gaudy - yacht.

Episode 2
Howtro Highport
061-221 through 064-221
Shortly after the holovid producer - Joshua Wallace – left, another man sat at the table. Marquis Harim Samadr introduced himself to Captain Ross and offered his apologies for not being able to attend the reception. After a brief conversation where they brought him up to speed, Harim led the group out of the pub in search of a party at which he could extend the celebrations. Despite his efforts and those of Thiel, they were unable to find anything suitable and they retired to their rooms for the night. Concerned that his friends were caught up in some sort of conspiracy against the Imperium, Harim spent some time trolling local databases for more information about Shariish and their anonymous benefactor.
The next morning, Jordan contacted Shariish and asked her to find him a media agent. Meanwhile, Harim persuaded the hotel desk clerk to tell him who had booked the rooms for his friends. The rooms had been paid for by a corporate account from Sentinel Express Lines – the same passenger line that Henri and Thiel had travelled on. After asking a few questions around the docks, Thiel determined that Sentinel Express Lines was a fairly new company running small passenger ships along the high-volume route connecting Sentinel and Howotro.
In the afternoon, Ross met with Sanford Marman – the media agent that Shariish had found. He soon learned that Marman would be too expensive to hire given the small amount of money he would reasonably expect to receive from the holovid deal. Harim quickly volunteered to act as Ross’ representative when they met with Wallace in the afternoon. As it turned out, Harim, Henri, and Thiel all contributed to the negotiations with Wallace. The deal they brokered was reasonably good, but they realized after the fact that - despite their attempts to rework the contract - Ross was unlikely to ever see any royalties. They did however walk out the office 20 thousand credits richer.
The next day, the group considered Mr. Chen’s business proposal. They did a few computer searches, and eventually found some references to him in a Law Enforcement database, but determined that his business was mostly legitimate. They arranged to meet with Mr. Chen the following day at his groundside offices. The rest of the day was spent in further investigation of Sentinel Express Lines and Shariish. Harim had apparently developed a bit of fascination for the woman, and arranged to have dinner with her. Applying his considerable charm to her, he not only convinced her to join him in his room, but also draw a few new pieces of information out of her. He even attempted to acquire her phone so that his friends could dig through her records, but he was unable to get it away from her without arouse suspicion.
The next morning, the men checked out of their nice – but very expensive – rooms, and took a shuttle to the Densun Downport. They spent a few hours on the surface exploring the spaceport and finding new hotels before Mr. Chen’s driver arrived to take them to their meeting. The aristocrats became increasingly uncomfortable as the neighborhoods they traveled through became progressively more run down, and were looking forward to the lunch Mr. Chen was buying them with some trepidation.
Lunch was provided in a dingy pastry shop in the same building as Mr. Chen’s office, but the food was surprisingly tasty. He refused to talk business until they had finished lunch and had gone to his new, fourth floor conference room. He was presenting some information about the ship he was looking to buy when the meeting was interrupted by an urgent call: “Mr. Chen! It’s Thomas Sun! He’s here looking for you…”
The call was cut off with the sound of gunfire and screaming. Chen turned to the group and said, “I’ll give you ten thousand credits, if you can get me to the starport safely.”
He explained that Thomas Sun was an enforcer for the Minlo family, and the family must be “upset” with him for trying to sell off his business. Harim quickly agreed, and readied his blade. Jordan and Thiel also began readying their weapons while Henri tried to determine the best place to hide. They determined that since the elevators were all on the third floor, where they supposed the thugs must be searching for Chen. Attempting to sneak down to the parking garage, they heard movement on stairs below them. Chen told them there were a couple of old grav cars on the roof that they might be able to use, and the party charged up the stairs. Thiel lingered behind as a rear guard. He fired his stunner at the first thug up the stairs knocking the man out, but the second one returned fire with a machine pistol of some sort and showered Thiel with chunks of concrete. Meanwhile Ross pulled a fire extinguisher off of the wall and placed it on a landing. Thiel ran from the thugs’ superior firepower, and they pursued. Ross waited with his laser pistol until the enemies reached the fire extinguisher. One well placed shot detonated the canister, and stunned the pursuers. Racing up a few more flights, Ross placed another extinguisher on the steps which caused the thugs to pause for a moment, giving the group even more of a lead.
Busting out of the door at the top of the stairs, they saw a garage-like building across the roof. Someone would have to hold that top of the stairs long enough for the others to get the grav cars up and running…

Episode 1
Howtro Highport
057-221 through 061-221
As the three men sat in the pub discussing their recent fortunes, they soon realized that someone was spending an inordinate amount of money and effort on their behalf. Captain Ross was given an immense suite in an exclusive hotel, and discovered that a gorgeous personal assistant – Shariish - had been hired to “ease his transition into civilian life.” Both Thiel and Henri had been sent first class ticket vouchers for travel to Howotro in order to attend the Ross’ retirement reception. They assumed that Jordan had come into to some wealth, but it turns out that some anonymous benefactor had arranged for their tickets and hotel rooms.
Determined to enjoy their time on station despite the mystery, the three men decided to experience a bit of the Highport’s night life and do some barhopping. While Thiel was entranced by the sheer size of the orbital station, Jordan noticed some people following the group. These people turned out to be reporters who had heard rumors about the “Heroic Captain Ross” and wanted to ask him about the reception at the end of the week. They seemed to be satisfied by Jordan’s appropriate but basically meaningless response and the three men were undisturbed for the rest of the evening.
Over the next few days, they each gathered information through their own channels. Thiel prowled the docks and learned that there were a number of ships hiring crew and that a new pirate was operating in nearby systems despite the large naval presence here. With the assistance of Shariish, he also acquired a burnt orange silk suit that he would wear to the reception.
Henri sought an audience with Marquis Sringasa of Howotro, and learned from the noble’s aide that the receptions given for retiring military officers have become increasingly elaborate social events. These parties attracted a variety of wealthy aristocrats and businessmen who were interested in meeting the retiring officers. Henri also arranged a meeting with the Marquis himself, but learned nothing more of interest.
Jordan asked Shariish a few questions, but learned little more than that she was hired by a “Mr. Smith”, and that she was available for a long term position should he desire it. He also made a few inquiries through naval channels but didn’t make much progress.
Finally, the day of the reception arrived, and while Jordan made his way quickly past the reporters waiting outside, Thiel happily talked to them. A short clip of Thiel proclaiming: “Captain Ross is my hero! He saved my life!” appeared on a number of news sites and broadcasts over the next few days. The reception began with dinner, and Jordan was pleased to hear that he was not expected to give any speeches. He was seated with Admiral Zarkhan and his niece Amalia, as well as Marquis Sringasa and his wife Martine and daughter Sarissa. When asked about the expense of the reception, the Admiral seemed a little confused and surprised, but not particularly displeased that Mr. Smith had spent so much money on the event.
Meanwhile, Thiel was seated at a table with a couple of hard characters Udar and Seska and eventually deduced that they were undercover bodyguards for Count Makinli. He also met Pangzhou Chen, a businessman from Howotro who had a proposal of some sort for Captain Ross.
Henri was stuck at a table with the remarkably unpleasant Baroness Keshiigma and Baron Sesu. Luckily, these two left the table quickly once the bar was opened. Henri did have a pleasant after-dinner conversation with Lady Naoko Iskendu, who eventually invited him to join her on a hunting expedition on her home planet of Zhuge.
Count Makinli appeared after dinner with Suzi, his bubble-headed date. The Count congratulated Jordan briefly and then pulled Marquis Sringasa aside for a private conversation. Henri spoke to Suzi, and soon suspected she wasn’t nearly as airheaded as she appeared to be.
As the guests mingled throughout the ballroom, Jordan noticed that a number of recently retired military officers had come with unusually stunning dates. He wondered if they had started as personal assistants like Shariish. Thiel introduced Mr. Chen to Jordan and three began discussing a business proposal and eventually agreed to meet with Mr. Chen at his planetside offices in a few days.
Later, Thiel approached Pilar Mills and her husband Darison - the outlandishly dressed representatives of Dragonfire Mining - and the three of them discussed fashion and what could be done to enhance Thiel’s orange suit.
Suzi introduced Henri to Captain Alfonso Mitrochev, a naval strategist of some renown. Captain Mitrochev’s date Alison seemed offended by Suzi’s presence, and to smooth things over Henri offered to get her a drink. As they walked to the bar, Alison revealed that she had some concerns about the grandiose retirement celebration, and commented that these receptions have grown more and more elaborate over the last two to three years.
After the reception, Jordan, Henri, and Thiel returned to the pub to enjoy a quiet drink and discuss what they had learned. Their conversation was interrupted by a man who claimed to be a holovid producer who wished to buy the rights to Captain Ross’ story.

Atterburn's Pub
Atterburn's Pub
Oneday, 057-221
second shift
Atterburn's Pub - "The Pub at the Hub" according to the glowing green sign over the door - is a typical highport pub, although perhaps a little larger and better appointed than most.
During mid-shift on a work day, the room is fairly empty. Only a handful of tables are taken by the underemployed spacers that frequent spaceport bars during the day.
The patrons at one of the tables stand out as being somewhat different. One of them has the rigid posture of a career Naval officer who has not quite adjusted to civilian life. Two of the others - immaculately groomed and dressed in expensive clothes - are obvious aristocrats slumming in a spaceport bar. However, they both seem remarkably relaxed and comfortable in the seedy environment. The last man looks more like the typical patrons of the bar, neither as rigid as the military man or as put-together as the nobles. His sharp eye and amiable grin do set him apart from the down-on-their-luck regulars.
One of the nobles receives a call, and excuses himself. Reporters lurk in ambush outside of the bar - none willing to challenge the barman's policy of privacy for his guests - but the aristocrat seems to have some practice with sort of thing and slips unseen out of side exit.

History:
Marquis Henri de Lyons LXXXVIII is immaculate in appearance. Not that he is handsome fellow, capable of causing sighs and gasps among the womenfolk whenever he appears. Henri just takes pride in his appearance. His wavy blonde hair sweeps back from his forehead in locks that barely move an inch in a wind storm. His face lacks any wrinkles, his skin is as smooth as highly polished marble, and his teeth whiter than snow.
Henri enjoyed a portion of his youth visiting elite parties and meeting many members of the nobility. He wasn't very productive during this time. Henri just loved to gossip, eat, gossip some more, and do some shmoozing along the way. Henri, however at some point during this time, decided to get involved in politics and so became a diplomat.
Henri did very well as a diplomat and quickly rose through the ranks. In his second term, however, Henri had an accident. No one knows what really happened, but rumors suggest that Henri's office somehow came into possession of a rare and illegal food called Pootlimpet. Pootlimpet causes uncontrollable flatulence in some pets, whose side effects induce mild hallucinogens. Pootlimpet became a highly sought after drug among some circles after it was outlawed when someone died due to inadequate ventilation. According to rumor, Henri decided to try to trade this food to some unknown circle for some unknown commodity and foolishly tried to do it in person. In the midst of the transaction at the storage location, a law enforcement vehicle turned the corner and started to advance on Henri and his contact. Henri immediately panicked and looked for an escape while his contact ran off. He decided that the garbage bin was an excellent place to hide and dove head first, only to discover that it was empty. His knee smashed and shattered on the bottom of the bin as he landed. Luckily for Henri, the police vehicle drove past without stopping and he found a phone to call for a transport to the hospital.
Henri de Lyons had quite a shock in his last term in office. He was invited to a banquet by his boss to celebrate the 60th birthday of the Pikushlu ambassador. It was a splendid affair, and Henri thought of himself as the shining exemplar of high society. Infused with this confidence in himself and the night, he decided to go and discuss the weather with the ambassador. As he reached out his hand for greeting, a shot fired off and barely missed Henri and the ambassador. The assailant was caught but then immediately committed suicide. The media the next day headlined that there was an attempt on the ambassador, but Henri knows the real truth. Obviously the attempt was on him.
Now, Henri just wants to get out of the political business. This assasination failed, but the next one might not. Besides that, Henri was getting bored. So he resigned from his office. The future is uncertain, but Henri is certain that it won't be boring.
Goals:
Henri is currently just hoping to see a little of the galaxy, maybe not get assassinated. Henri is always on the look out for quick money and good deals. He also has a goal of trying to eat the best food in every sector and planet and stay in the best accomodations.

Sentinel
History:
Thiel's mien is unassuming and not very impressive: pudgy and slump-shouldered with a weak chin and thinning sandy hair. But his eyes twinkle with intelligence, and he's much quicker than he looks. There's usually a shy but friendly grin on his face. Most people find him quite likeable.
Thiel was a foundling, and to this day does not know anything about his parents or family. He grew up at the Sentinel Shelter for Indigent Youth under the auspices of the religious sisters of the Order of Radiant Mercy. Early on, one Sister Piera noticed his sharp mind and low self-esteem, and took him under her wing. She told him that he could achieve great things if he believed in himself. She also instilled in him a sense of loyalty and fair play that would often prove to be his downfall.
A medium-sized criminal organization, known as the Vaccuum Cleaners, had a contact within the Shelter who alerted them about promising young prospects. Sent by the contact to a "job interview", Thiel was suprised to find himself shanghaied onto a shuttle and taking part in a heist of cargo from an orbital transport. Thiel acquitted himself well and found himself trained and serving as a lookout on many such heists. He learned how to hide effectively in the airlocks and corridors of the spaceships and ports of Sentinel, as well as how to take out a watchman with a well-timed stunner shot.
Before long a slightly older man in the Cleaners crew, Gorgi Tonis a.k.a "the Nose", befriended the young Thiel, filling his head with dreams of great wealth and treating him to tastes of the good life. Thiel enjoyed his new work and with the Nose's guidance, he rose quickly in the organization. Later, Thiel stumbled on evidence that Gorgi had been tipping off a rival gang about lucrative targets, but loyal to his patron, he declined to report this to the gang leaders. A few years later, this decision would come back to haunt him when Gorgi dropped a dime on the head of the Cleaners, allowing the authorities to roll up the whole organization. Thiel barely avoided arrest himself. Enraged, he confronted Gorgi, in the process revealing that he knew far more about Gorgi's extracurricular activities than the latter had imagined. Soon Thiel heard on the street that Gorgi had some heavies out looking for him in order to rearrange his face. Wanting to remain whole in body, he signed on to the tramp freighter Howler as a deck hand, and left Sentinel behind.
Thiel had not thought much beyond getting off-world as quickly as possible, but found that life on the crew of a merchant freighter agreed with him. He quickly picked up the skills of working in zero gravity as the Howler plied the minor trade routes of the Deeps. A couple of years into his service, Thiel was approached by a detective, Jinn Mackree, who was looking for someone to provide information on a couple of noble passengers traveling incognito. Always on the lookout for an extra credit, Thiel jumped at the chance. Using stealth skills honed during his time with the Cleaners, Thiel was able to keep the passengers under observation and provide a complete report on their conversations. (Unbeknownst to him, this report was passed along to the Marquis Harim Samadar.) Thiel continued to perform occasional odd jobs for the detective in the future. Shortly after reaching his 30th birthday, Thiel had worked his way up to assistant sensor operator on the Howler.
Near the end of his second term on the ship, the captain picked up a mysterious cargo on the edge of the Great Rift. The Howler then made a series of jumps, arriving a system not far from Sentinel. The ship's computer immediately blared alarms: the system was under military restriction, with unauthorized vessels subject to being fired upon without warning! The captain told the panicked crew that the people he was delivering the cargo to had arranged everything, they'd be in and out quickly, and promised that everyone's share of this deal would be worth twice a year's pay. The Howler skulked in an asteroid belt for half a day before the captain received a pinpoint transmission. He took put the Howler on a slow trajectory deeper into the system then ordered all systems powered down. Suddenly, a pair of unmarked destroyers, also powered down, loomed ahead. The Howler docked with one and the captain personally supervised transfer of cargo to the mystery ship. A nervous Thiel continually scanned the passive sensor readouts for threats. He could tell there was some sort of planetoid a little further in system that seemed to have a few ships in orbit around it, plus some fuzzy traces and comm traffic much further out on the opposite edge of the system. But nothing came close, and he breathed a sigh of relief when the Howler decoupled from the destroyer and began a slow ascent out of the ecliptic heading for jump distance.
When the captain ordered the Howler's systems powered back on, Thiel risked a quick active scan. His relief turned to horror as the picture became clear. The planetoid was a Naval shipyard; the ships in orbit around it were in drydock under construction or repair, helpless; the traffic on the edge of the system were distracted naval pickets trying to run down an elusive intruder. Worst of all, the two destroyers were stealthily approaching the Naval base. Their EW systems appeared good enough that they'd be able to get the shipyard well inside their launch envelope without being detected by the Navy. But to the Howler's sensors high above and to the rear, the destroyers were an open book. The radiological signatures were as clear as daylight. Suddenly Thiel realized what the mysterious cargo must have been - nukes. The ships were [###############], and Thiel was about to witness a massacre.
Without stopping to think, he sent an urgent comm message warning the shipyard about the impending assault. The destroyers must have picked up the transmission and immediately went active, accelerating towards the station at full speed, hoping to get to attack range before a defense could be prepared. But one aging cruiser in orbit around the station, due for decommissioning, had not yet been fully disarmed. An engineer on the ship (one Jordan Ross) worked a minor miracle getting its reactor fired up and its systems online in record time. The cruiser was able to head off the attack, sustaining heavy damage but blasting one of the enemy destroyers out of space and holding off the other long enough for more help to arrive.
Thiel was nearly put out the airlock by his enraged captain. But luckily for him the Howler's first officer Hara Obiedelies grew up as a Navy brat. Hearing what had happened she stepped in and relieved the captain. There was a brief struggle, but most of the crew backed her, and soon the Howler was headed back in system broadcasting a surrender message. In the aftermath, the Howler's captain was executed. In her testimony, Obiedelies she gave full credit to Thiel for his actions, but as the ranking officer as well as a member of a prominent naval family, she ended up with most of the honors. The Howler was confiscated, but Obiedelies was able to leverage her accolades into ownership of another Free Trader, the Wandering Wave. Thiel happily accepted her offer to join her as chief sensor operator.
Thiel served under Obiedelies for two mostly uneventful terms. Once Thiel briefly succumbed to temptation and agreed to smuggle a black-market cargo into Howotro High Port. But when his captain casually greeted him on the bridge the next morning, he knew he could not go through with it. He didn't mind risking his own reputation, but could not bring himself to risk Hara's. Still, he didn't fully realize how much he loved her until she unexpectedly delayed the Wandering Wave's departure from port and checked herself into a hospital. She died just two days later from advanced cancer which she had kept hidden from her crew. Thiel couldn't bring himself to set foot on the Wave again. Instead he drifted from port to port for a few weeks, until he received an unexpected invitation to a ceremony on Howotro...
Allies, Contacts, Rivals, Enemies:
Enemy: Gorgi "the Nose" Tonis. Ex-petty criminal, now bounty hunter. Fears that Thiel may still have some dirt on him from crime days on Sentinel. (This isn't true as far as Thiel knows, but he might know something that he doesn't realize is significant.)
Contact: Jinn Mackree. A detective that Thiel has done a bit of work for on the side during his Free Trader days.
Goals:
Thiel is a little bit adrift right now, as his beloved captain recently and unexpectedly died, leaving him without a ship to serve on. Despite that, Thiel is convinced that some day, his bad luck will end and fortune will smile on him, and he'll make a big score of some kind. He's always looking for some scheme with a big payoff.
Also, Thiel is a foundling and has no idea who his family is. It's not actually something that he thinks about much or actively seeks information on. But if some relevant info dropped into his lap, he'd probably be interested in pursuing it... and/or, he could get caught up in the agenda of someone who knows more.

Goals:
Jack has been making a decent living as a gun for hire on the frontier, traveling almost continually from job to job. He enjoys having a mobile life, with new adventures in every port.
History: Jack grew up working in the seaside shipyards with his father, like many other boys in his city on Glarsincham. He never knew his mother...she died when Jack was born, and his father later died in an unfortunate shipping container incident. His family gone, and with little interest in being reminded of his loss, Jack decided it was best to move along and make a life for himself elsewhere.
Jack enlisted in the Army's Light Infantry during the Solomani Rim war when he was 18. He was a fine match for the job, where young, strong men with minimal family ties were preferred. There wasn’t heavy fighting in the sector he was stationed in, but there was a lot of travel, some garrison duty, a number of minor skirmishes against partisans and separatists, several police actions, anti-terrorist operations, and a handful of anti-imperial uprisings during this time that the army was sent in to quell. The war was over before his first term was complete.
He performed admirably and got a couple promotions during his first and second terms. He was stationed in a number of different places throughout the sector - 6 months here, a year there. His longest assignment was in Suukir where he was stationed for almost the full 4 years of his second term.
This second term was very quiet, with few major operations. The Army saw officer potential in him, and put him through Advanced Training, his garrison assignment was boring, and his Advanced Training was too academic for him at this time. He had too much time on his hands at this point, and spent it at bars wooing girls.
The girls were a welcome distraction of the tedium of his duties, but one of them....Olivia, was more than a simple distraction. She worked at a local movie theater, that he frequented when he was local...mostly to see her. They struck up a romantic relationship, but his deployments made it difficult for them to maintain the romance. In the end they stayed friends, but not very close. Jack threw himself into serious physical training to take his mind off the girl and focus on his military duties. He got promoted again...to Corporal.
During his third term he was assigned to a covert mission to a planet named Leitaon. The surface of Leitaon is almost completely covered by ocean with the population living on a number of floating cities. Jack was chosen because of his seafaring background. During the Solomani Rim War, Leitaon was one of a number of worlds that broke off from the Imperium to form the Carillian Assembly. The Leitaon aristocracy wanted to remain Imperial, but there was a popular uprising and the government seceded rather than fight a civil war.
In 208, a small pro-Imperial faction attempted a coup. Harper was sent in with a small team on a covert operation to support the coup. Their team was discovered, and found themselves pinned down with little cover in the middle of an angry, and well armed mob. It was a blood bath.
His team was surrounded and outnumbered, with no reinforcements in sight. The skirmish went on for hours. Jack survived the onslaught against all odds...personally killing scores of men, many with nothing but a pistol and eventually his bare hands once his ammo out. Most of his team was dead by the time an extraction team arrived.
The coup collapsed shortly after this battle and the Imperium successfully denied and cover up their official involvement. Jack was offered a commendation and a sure promotion to Lance Sergant, due to his demonstration of valor "provided he kept his mouth shut". Jack lost too many brothers in that battle to simply tuck away their memories and pretend it never happened.
He soon retired from the Army, in good standing, and found his way to the city of Densun on Howotro. It was there that he fell in with a bad crowd. Jack was recruited by the Zangduk family (probably the second most powerful of the criminal families after Minlo), as a bodyguard/hired gun. He had all the right stuff to make a fine enforcer. Much of their business was extortion and loan sharking, but they had their fingers in almost every imaginable scheme.
Karl Cooper, a crime boss that ran a bunch of jobs and schemes for the Zangduk family, saw potential in Jack, took him under his wing as a protege, and taught him the ropes of business. Jack did a range of odd jobs for them, most of which included driving or roughing up folks unwilling to pay for protections.
The Zangduk staged a major heist, with Jack's help, that essentially made Cooper's entire group a target of the competing Minlo family. They stole an important shipment of black market military gear and supplies that were en route to the Minlos. The Minlos realized they needed an inside man to get at Cooper, discovered Jack's involvement, and tried to hire Jack to either kill Cooper (or step aside) so some other assassin could get to him.
Jack was never one to take a pay off for betrayal, so he revealed the plot to Cooper, and helped Cooper stage a fake death. Cooper was grateful for the assistance, knowing that Jack risked becoming a target himself, should the ruse be discovered. Cooper had earned enough from the heist to disappear for a while...comfortably. He knew the Minlos reach and resources were too great, and eventually he'd be discovered if he showed up on the map.
Jack disappeared as well, and spent the last few months making a decent profit as a gun for hire on the frontier. He spent some of those profits on weapons and augmentations at a planet named Irliiki, just outside the border of the Imperium, where their technology is fairly advanced and the laws fairly lax. He bartered a bodyguard job with some merchants, that left him in Neifaonshua, but once he ran low on cash, he started looking for new prospects.

Homeworld: Kuzar
History:
Harim looks like the every man, perfectly average in every way. But he was lucky enough to have been born into one of the wealthiest and most eccentric families on Kuzar.
Samadr clan is large and spread wide across not only Kuzar but the whole sector where the family's luxury agricultural products fetch good prices all over the nearby worlds.
It is expected that family members participate in the business. Younger members are sent off world to do the hard and risky parts of the business. Harim was sent out with his cousins out into the universe to find new markets and exploit old ones.
Once away from Kuzar, Kuzari become free of the oppressing nature of their society and become wild with freedom, especially if they can afford it. Harim and his cousins were no different. They quickly forgot about developing new markets, and started to focus on some serious partying. Going from world to world, trying to enjoy what is best in each place.
Harim's first years as a full fledge dilettante he was brash, and arrogant. Proudly bragging about his conquests and daring do. During a party at the Duke's manse on Sentinel he casually insulted Baron Cozrin's wife. The Baron overhearing the insult, challenged Harim to a duel, to recover his honor. Harim was going to fight, but Cozrin is well known for easily taking offense and easily dispatching the offender. Harim lost considerable face with his peers after he had to back down and apologize to the Baron. He became unable to return to Sentinel for a long time after that.
Harim still wasn't ready to return to the family business. He made the rounds of the courts in the sector, going to parties and participating in the high drama that court society is. At times he actually became useful to others organizing parties or events. He also liked to help people in small ways. But once the parties faded, Harim usually moved on. It was during this time he became closer to his cousin Abrin, they both followed similar paths of debauchery. Harim wasn't quite the thrill seeker. As a party organizer he crossed roads with Skidmore Owen a sleaze ball that had to be watched because he would insinuate himself into circles, only to betray them with compromising evidence. This person would plague the rest of his life as patrons and friends fell victim to his petty blackmails.
At 26 Harim thought it was a good time to settle down and go back to the family business. Abrin did not want to return to work, so he arranged for Harim to take his post on Howotro. Harim became the shipping administrator on the Howotro branch SamadrAgricultural office. Abrin's neglect was so deep that an important part of the business was falling apart. Instead of getting help from the family, he sought help elsewhere to repair the damage. The branch was partnered with several ship owners, he sought their help to repair the damage with some success. Reporting Abrin would have been the smart thing to do, instead Abrin reported Harim as the one that had lost millions of credits on speculative trading. The family convened around the crisis to see who was at fault, Harim had to defend himself against his accuser Abrin and won. Abrin was kicked out of the family, Harim was just kicked out of the business.
Seeing that business was not his "core" competency Harim returned to his partying life style. He became quite the social operator, using his influence to advance himself and others around him. It was during this time that the complete break with his family occurred. He took in Alia a cousin that somehow escaped the clutches of Kuzar. Chased by her brothers, she needed shelter and Harim provided it.
At 34, family business long behind him, he becomes the consort of the older but still stunning Margaritte Susa, the head of the Tourist Association, the company that owns and operates hotels and other venues on Pikushlu.
Four years later he meets Count Davram Makinli, a powerful charismatic noble that changes his life. He also no longer relies on the family wealth that had supported him for so long. During this time his relationship with Margaritte Susa dissolves amicably, they see each other less and less as Harim becomes less involved in the social life of the sector.

Summary: Kuzar is the home of the Kuzari, a minor human race that had barely entered the industrial age when first encountered by Vilani scouts. Kuzar remained independent through the First Imperium and the Rule of Man, and has only recently been absorbed into the Third Imperium. Kuzar has been ruled by a strict Theocracy for nearly a millennium, but a democratic movement has started to gain some popular support. Female off-worlders are warned to stay on the starport grounds, or better yet in orbit, since according to local law women are little more than property.

The Hub
Howotro High Port
Oneday, 057/221
Second shift
Howotro, or "The Hub" as it is more commonly known to spacefarers, has the busiest commercial starport in the Imperial region of the Deeps sector. Situated at the junction of two major trade routes, more ships pass through this system in a day than many starports see in a year.
The planet itself is home to more than 400 million people, divided into a dozen rival nations. The weakest of these has an economy stronger than many neighboring star systems. The rivalry between these nations ranges from almost friendly economic competition to espionage and sabotage with an occasional outright war.
Every day, the Hub draws more Travellers from throughout the sector, seeking fame or fortune or maybe just a steady job on either side of the law.
Four of these Travellers find themselves in the Hub's orbital starport, enjoying drinks and a view of the planet from the windows in Atterburn's Pub. It's mid-shift on a work day, and the pub is mostly empty. These four are discussing the same thing as the other underemployed Pub patrons, "So, what do we do now?"

Deeps Sector
Deeps Sector
The sector known as the Deeps (Aeitle Sakh to the Aslan) is a frontier region lying along the Imperial border. Bounded to spinward by territories dominated by the Aslan, to trailing by the Imperium, to rimward by the Solomani Confederation and to coreward by the Great Rift, Deeps is a diverse region showing the influences of all these neighbors.
History:
Little is known of the early history of the Deeps, but the presence of Human minor races and various artifacts strongly suggest the Ancients were active in the region.
The Vilani scouted the trailing areas of the sector before and during the First Imperium, but established only a small number of colonies. There are rumors that rebellious Vilani states in nearby sectors trained and recruited mercenaries from the minor races found in the Deeps, but little hard evidence survives.
During the Interstellar Wars, when the Vilani and the Terran Confederation came into conflict, large numbers of people from both empires were displaced and sought refuge in the Deeps. Caledon and a number of other significant worlds were colonized by these settlers.
The Rule of Man, the empire formed when Terra finally conquered the Vilani empire, was turbulent and politically unstable. The Deeps received several waves of immigration during this time, both from ordinary people fleeing the chaos and from rebellious nobles and ambitious warlords who had been exiled from the Imperium.
When the Second Imperium finally collapsed, the Long Night fell. Interstellar government, communication and trade broke down and eventually disappeared except in a few isolated outposts of civilization. During this period, the Reavers appeared in the Deeps. These were petty warlords or pirates who gathered small fleets and used them to loot backward worlds and carve out small empires. These empires were rarely long lived, collapsing back into chaos once the founding strongman died.
The same sort of pattern developed throughout the territory claimed by the Rule of Man; but, as the Third Imperium grew it absorbed these pocket empires and pushed the surviving Reavers deeper and deeper into the frontiers. The Duke of Marlheim is sometimes called the Last Reaver, but in reality the Duchy evolved into a legitimate - if somewhat aggressive - state generations ago.
At time the Aslan first began expanding into the Deeps, there was no central human government to oppose them as the Long Night was well underway. The Aslan had no central authority either, and individual Aslan clans fought a number of small wars against various human splinter states. The borders changed little during this time since the sides were fairly evenly matched. When the Third Imperium finally reached the Deeps sector, their superior organization and technology gradually ended the Aslan threat. At some point, although the date is uncertain to human scholars, there was a schism within the Aslan Hierate and about half of their worlds with in the sector broke away and formed the Ulane Hierate. Little is known about the reasons or nature of the schism, but all of the worlds involved had significant human populations, and it seems that the humans are involved in the Ulane government in some way.
When the Solomani Autonomous Region was created in 141, about one third of the Imperial systems in the Deeps were included in the new political body. During the Solomani Rim war (198 to 200), there was some fighting in the trailing areas of the Deeps, but bulk of the war was fought elsewhere. A large number of worlds simply declared their independence from both empires at this time. Neither side had the resources available to forcibly reintegrate these worlds and thus a narrow neutral zone was established. The Carillian Assembly and the Union of Harmony were founded during this time as loose confederations established for mutual defense and local trading. Over the last century, the Carillian Assembly has formed close trade relations with the Imperium, while the Union of Harmony has made similar arrangements with the Solomani Confederation.
